AC Milan set unwanted derby record after Inter disgrace

After losing 5-1 to Inter in the first derby della madonnina of the 2023/24 season, AC Milan will mourn more than the lost three points, as the humiliating defeat went a long way to denting their pride as well. 

The Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri entered the fixture presuming to be equals after each claiming the maximum nine points from their opening three Serie A matches, but the events on the pitch proved otherwise. 

AC Milan were no match for Inter on the day and were blown out of the water in a humbling 5-1 defeat. 

It marked the first time that Inter had scored as many as five goals against their city rivals since 1974, but that was not the most humiliating aspect of the Rossoneri’s defeat. 

The 5-1 loss to Inter also meant that the Nerazzurri had gotten the better of their rivals in five consecutive matches in all competitions for the first time in the history of the derby. 

Inter’s winning streak against AC Milan dates back to the start of 2023 when the blue half of Milan rose above their city adversaries 3-0 to clinch the Supercoppa Italiana title for last season. 

Since then, Milan and Inter have locked horns in Serie A and the UEFA Champions League, with the Nerazzurri coming out on top each time. 

Perhaps most painfully, Inter knocked AC Milan out of the UCL at the semifinal stage, winning both the “home” and “away” legs of the tie. 

Inter’s dominance over AC Milan in the latest fixture also helped them climb the summit of the Serie A table and they will be hoping to keep their arch nemesis under their foot for much longer.
