Senegal dominated Harambee Stars from the start of their international friendly match, scoring eight goals while maintaining control.

Harambee Stars suffered a heavy 8-0 defeat to Senegal in an international friendly held at the Mardan Stadium in Turkey on Tuesday, November 18.

Both teams were going into the match full of frustration after failing to make a mark in their first set of friendlies. Harambee Stars had recently lost 1-0 to Equatorial Guinea, while Senegal had gone down 2-0 against Brazil.

The Lions of Teranga are preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 and are playing the friendlies to gauge their form ahead of the continental showpiece. Meanwhile, Benni McCarthy is building a solid team for the 2027 AFCON and the friendlies are equally important.

Harambee Stars vs Senegal: First Half Action

The match opened at a high tempo, with the Lions of Teranga immediately signalling their intent. Sadio Mané and the Senegalese forwards applied early pressure, consistently posing a threat to the Harambee Stars from the very first moments.

Baron Ochieng produced a crucial defensive intervention a few minutes into the game, standing firm to block a dangerous Senegalese attack and forcing the ball out for a corner.

Although the resulting set piece momentarily increased the pressure on Harambee Stars, Senegal were unable to capitalise, with the corner ultimately coming to nothing.

Senegal continued pressing hard, with Harambee Stars' defence looking solid, but a strike from Nicolas Jackson in the ninth minute gave the Lions of Teranga the lead.

The first goal had barely settled for Harambee Stars, who were still trying to regroup, when Malick Diouf struck again in the 12th minute, doubling Senegal’s lead and pushing the scoreline to 2-0.

The Lions of Teranga maintained their relentless momentum, adding another goal just a minute later through Nicolas Jackson, before Sadio Mane displayed his trademark brilliance with a swift finish in the 17th minute, extending Senegal's advantage to 4-0.

Harambee Stars attempted to regroup and push forward after conceding four goals, but every effort was quickly shut down by Senegal's disciplined defending and superior technical quality.

Jonah Ayunga tried to spark a response in the 23rd minute with a promising effort, but it ultimately fell short of giving Harambee Stars a breakthrough. Austin Odhiambo was awarded a free kick in the 28th minute, but it ultimately failed to pay off.

Sadio Mane then stepped up to take a penalty after his teammate was brought down by Baron Ochieng, calmly converting the spot-kick to extend Senegal's lead to 5-0 in the 30th minute. Shortly after, in the 34th minute, the Al-Nassr winger added another goal.

In the 35th minute, Austin Odhiambo was awarded a corner, but it was not converted successfully. However, Senegal continued tormenting Harambee Stars, and even though their conversion rate declined a bit, they gave the Kenyans a run for their money.

Harambee Stars vs Senegal: Second Half Action

Going into the second half, Harambee Stars were looking to make a mark against a very tough Senegal side that had now gotten the momentum to score.

The Lions of Teranga maintained complete control of the match, stringing together quick, precise passes that proved far too difficult for Harambee Stars to disrupt.

Senegal added another goal in the 48th minute courtesy of Ibrahim Mbaye, taking the score to 7-0. The former African champions continued piling pressure on Harambee Stars.

Harambee Stars created a few opportunities to score, with Ryan Ogam coming off the bench to make an impact, but Senegal’s goalkeeper and defence stayed vigilant, ensuring no chances were converted.

In the 63rd minute, a Senegalese player went down with an injury, sparking a heated exchange between Harambee Stars assistant coach Vasili Manousakis and the referee, which ultimately saw the coach shown a red card.

Shariff Musa and Lawrence Okoth then came off the bench, with Benni McCarthy hoping to finally make a mark in the Senegal-dominated match.

A penalty was subsequently awarded to Cherif Ndiaye, who calmly converted it, sending the ball into the back of Harambee Stars' net and extending Senegal's lead to an emphatic 8-0.

In the closing stages of the match, Senegal created several opportunities they could not convert, while Harambee Stars held on, hoping to salvage at least a consolation goal.
