Harambee Stars aim to frustrate Ivory Coast in Abidjan, potentially altering Group F standings and World Cup 2026 qualification.

Harambee Stars held their first training session in Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday night ahead of their final 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against the Elephants.

The session, conducted at Lycée Classique Cocody, marked the start of Kenya’s bid to make life difficult for the tournament favourites in their last Group F fixture at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan. Kick-off is scheduled for 10pm Kenyan time on Tuesday.

Kenya’s delegation arrived in Abidjan on Saturday evening and settled into their hotel in the Akouedo area, located 30 kilometres from the stadium.

The Harambee Stars first training session at Lycée Classique Cocody proceeded without interruptions from local disturbances.

Kenya coach Benni McCarthy has publicly emphasized that his team will not make things easy for the Elephants. Having drawn 0-0 in their only previous encounter in June 2024, McCarthy is likely to adopt a disciplined, counter-attacking approach, aiming first and foremost to avoid defeat.

Harambee Stars, currently third in Group F with 12 points, face a tough challenge against the unbeaten Ivory Coast, who top the table with 23 points.

Gabon, in second place with 22 points, host Burundi in Franceville, and the result of that match could determine whether the Elephants secure a direct ticket to the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA.

Kenya’s Mission: Playing the Spoiler

Tuesday’s game is more than just a fixture for Harambee Stars as it is an opportunity to influence the final standings of Group F.

A surprise result, combined with a Gabonese victory over Burundi, could see Ivory Coast’s hopes of direct qualification disrupted. McCarthy’s pragmatic approach, focused on defensive solidity and quick counters, could frustrate the Elephants’ potent attack, giving Harambee Stars a real chance to make history.

Striker Ryan Ogam, who has been instrumental in Kenya’s qualifying campaign, will be central to the team’s attacking plans.

Ivory Coast, meanwhile, comes into the match on the back of a 7-0 demolition of Seychelles, but Kenya presents a different challenge.

Unlike the minnows they recently faced, the Harambee Stars have the motivation to disrupt a historic run, and their counter-attacking potential could trouble even the most organized Elephants.
