Kenyan goalkeeper Farouk Shikalo has opened up on why Harambee Stars are still struggling to find a player who can succeed midfielder Anthony Akumu.

Harambee Stars goalkeeper Farouk Shikalo believes Kenya is yet to find a long-term replacement for midfielder Anthony ‘Teddy’ Akumu.

Akumu has been part of the national team setup for over a decade although he has not been receiving gall-ups in recent matches but was one of the undroppable players under ex-coach Engin Firat.

Firat had so much trust in Akumu that he called and fielded him even when he was not getting gametime at his club for months and his successor Benni McCarthy utilised him initially but has looked elsewhere recently.

However, Shikalo maintains the country still lacks a proper defensive midfielder and that is why McCarthy has been forced to improvise as witnessed with the fielding of Manzur Okwaro in the position during the 2024 African Nations Championships, despite being a central defender by trade.

Why is Anthony Akumu Still Hard to Replace?

“He [McCarthy] noticed the weakness of this team early. Kenya does not have an experienced No.6 like Teddy Akumu,” Shikalo said on TikiTaka Show. “In Kenya right now, we have a shortage in goalkeeping, No.6 and maybe striker, if you take off [Michael] Olunga and [Ryan] Ogam."

“The coach looked and realised he had a problem in this position because by then, [Brian] Musa was the only No.6 we had and I think he had a hamstring issue,” the goalkeeper added over the team’s shortcomings ahead of CHAN 2024 and World Cup qualifiers.

“That is why when we played a friendly, he brought in [Chris] Erambo and Marvin [Nabwire]. Then he added a striker and goalkeeper. Byrne [Omondi] was not initially in the team but the coach saw the need to add him because once you have a good shot stopper with a good defence and a lethal striker then you are good. The other position [midfield], you could go with a makeshift and still get a result.”

Akumu, who now plays for Lebanese side Nejmeh SC, last featured for Harambee Stars in March this year, starting both matches as Kenya drew 3-3 with The Gambia before a 2-1 home loss to Gabon.
