Rising Stars captain Amos Wanjala has reflected on the lessons learnt from their U20 AFCON campaign in Egypt.
Rising Stars captain Amos Wanjala believes Kenya’s maiden appearance at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations has planted the seeds for long-term progress, despite the team falling short in Egypt.
Kenya, making its debut at the continental showpiece, exited at the group stage following defeats to Morocco (3-2) and Tunisia (3-1), before settling for a 2-2 draw against Nigeria in their final match.
Wanjala, who was visibly emotional on the pitch after costly defensive errors, says the tournament served as a crucial wake-up call—and one that the players intend to learn from.

Rising Star Bayanda Walaza on How Ferdinand Omanyala is Helping Shape His Sprinting Career
Bayanda Walaza opens up about finding strength and inspiration in Ferdinand Omanyala as he chases his sprinting dreams.
“We are back home. It has been a learning experience although we did not do well in Egypt,” Wanjala told reporters upon the team’s arrival on Sunday.
“We have to correct ourselves because we know we have time. We have time to fight back and show we can still do it, which is the important thing.
“We take the positives about the tournament as well as the negatives, and where necessary, we will correct.”
Kenya’s build-up to the tournament was far from ideal. The team only played one international friendly—against Ghana, which ended in a 2-2 draw—alongside several matches against local opposition.

FKF National Teams coordinator Athanas Obala, who accompanied the squad to Egypt, admitted that while the Rising Stars’ early exit was disappointing, the experience was invaluable.
“We are happy that they put up a spirited fight despite coming back home early,” Obala said in a post-tournament interview. “But we could pick a few positives from the team. We have a future in terms of giving these young guys more exposure.”
“That tournament gave us a lot of exposure, playing against top nations like Nigeria, Tunisia and Morocco—who are clearly ahead of us in terms of youth development and football structures.”

Benni McCarthy Reveals Why He Snubbed South Africa And Europe For Harambee Stars Role
Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has opened on why he chose the Kenyan national football team coaching role despite being linked with a return to either South Africa or Europe.
Obala praised the team’s resilience, particularly in their final outing against Nigeria, where they fought back from a goal down to lead 2-1 before conceding late.
“We are proud of the boys. They really pushed themselves, especially in the last match. They showed resilience in both defending and attacking,” he noted.
“With good structures in place, especially from the youth level, we’ll be able to put up a good show in future.”
While the Rising Stars didn’t make it to the knockout rounds, Wanjala and Obala are united in the belief that this experience has laid a strong foundation for the future.
The squad now sets its sights on the 2028 Olympic qualifiers, where many of these players are expected to regroup and make another push on the international stage.
