Harambee Stars boss Benni McCarthy’s push to have South African players move abroad early seems to be paying off after an exciting prospect landed a big-money Saudi transfer.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has always been critical of footballers back home in South Africa for being “too comfortable” and not wanting to test themselves abroad.

McCarthy has on several occasions hit out at Premier Soccer League stars who opt to play their entire careers in South Africa when they have the talent to square it out for some of the world’s best clubs.

It is from this that he has been pushing highly talented youngsters in South Africa to move abroad when they are still young and the Harambee Stars boss must be delighted by the latest move from his former club Orlando Pirates.

Winger Mohau Nkota has secured a career-changing move to the cash-rich Saudi Pro League after sealing a deal with Al-Ettifaq which will see him come up against big names such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mane, Karim Benzema and Riyad Mahrez among others.

Nkota has secured a big-money transfer to Saudi Arabia after just one season in the South African top flight that saw him play 39 matches, score seven goals and provide five assists, since his promotion to the senior team last September.

“I feel so special I don’t think it is pressure on me, it is just to go there and work and be the person I am. Do what I have been doing,” the 20-year-old left-footed winger said on Mike Morton Talks Football.

“I will miss them (fans) how they shout my name when I play at Orlando Stadium. Thanks to the Orlando Pirates fans for being there for me and supporting me. I know I just played one season but I am going to miss you and shine for you on the other side,” he added.

That is the kind of ‘boss move’ McCarthy has been agitating for as he feels South African players ‘waste’ their prime years in the local league instead of testing themselves abroad.

Nkota will therefore be hoping to live up to expectations as he begins a new chapter in his career, having followed the Bafana Bafana legend’s career path, given McCarthy also left South Africa as 20-year-old to join Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam before he went on to play for other top teams in Europe.
