A Malaysia national team footballer survives an acid attack, leading to two arrests and heightened concerns over athlete safety.

A Malaysia national team footballer was splashed with concentrated sulfuric acid on Sunday resulting in a horrific attack that has left the nation in shock.

The incident, which occurred at a bustling shopping center in a satellite township for Kuala Lumpur has led to the arrest of two individuals suspected of involvement in the assault.

Selangor police chief, Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, reported that the latest arrest was made yesterday afternoon in Bandar Baru Bangi, Kajang.

The suspect, a man in his 30s, has been remanded for five days to assist with the ongoing investigation.

This follows the arrest of another young man in his 20s on Sunday in Pandan Indah, Ampang. However, the latter was found not to be involved in the attack and is set to be released.

“The investigation revealed that the real suspect who carried out the attack was riding a motorcycle and had used a fake registration number, similar to the one belonging to the first suspect we apprehended,” Hussein explained as per The Sun.

Despite the release of the initial suspect, he will be re-arrested as he tested positive for drug use.

The victim of the attack, Selangor FC winger Faisal Halim, suffered severe body injuries believed to be caused by the acid.

He was promptly taken to a private hospital in Petaling Jaya, where he is currently reported to be in stable condition.

The incident has rattled the local football community, coming just three days after another national player, Akhyar Rashid, was injured in a robbery outside his home in the eastern state of Terengganu.

A photo that quickly spread online shows a visibly distressed Faisal in brown trousers, seated on a bench with burn marks evident on his skin.

The police have initiated an investigation under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which deals with voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means.

Hamidin Mohamad Amin, the president of the Football Association of Malaysia, expressed his distress over the attacks on the national players.

"I am upset and sad about these violent acts against our players. The people of Malaysia pray that Akhyar and Faisal recover quickly and return to the field," he stated in a press release on Sunday.

The community and fans have rallied on social media, extending their support and calling for increased security measures to protect athletes.

The attacks have sparked a nationwide conversation about the safety of public figures and the measures needed to prevent such violent incidents in the future.
