The death of the Portuguese forward in a car accident in Spain on Thursday brought back memories of the Hillsborough stadium tragedy in Sheffield in 1989, where 97 fans lost their lives.

"At Liverpool, we've always considered ourselves one big family. Now that a member of our family is gone, we have to unite and support each other. The last few days have shown that," said Rush, a club ambassador, quoted by the Mirror.

"The same thing happened with Hillsborough, but on a much larger scale due to the number of people who lost their lives and the number of families that were devastated. It doesn't matter who you are, a player or a fan, we're all together," he added.

Rush was also struck by personal tragedy this week due to the death of his older brother, which prevented him from being in Gondomar.

"I was invited to Diogo's funeral, but with the passing of my brother Gerald, it was impossible to go. I'm still struggling to accept it. I was in the midst of preparing for Gerald's funeral when the news about Diogo came. To be honest, it's been difficult to take."

Memories of a great striker

Rush, Liverpool's all-time leading scorer, had nothing but praise for Jota, who spent five seasons at the club.

"Diogo was a great player, probably the best forward at the club. He always gave 100 percent. He made a difference whether he started or came off the bench. He was a very down-to-earth person, a true gentleman. We will miss him dearly, both for the special person he was and for what he did on the football pitch for Liverpool and Portugal," he said, also offering words of support to Jota's teammates.

"It's especially difficult for the players, who will soon be back in training.

"They are expected to carry on with their work, but ultimately, they are only human beings who feel the same emotions as all of us. I believe that when someone dies, we continue to function, and only a few weeks later do we realize the magnitude of the terrible loss. We know we have to get on with life, but it's hard. Diogo will never be forgotten because he embodied everything Liverpool is."

Manager Arne Slot, captain Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Conor Bradley, Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones, Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Joe Gomez were among those who attended the funeral, along with former players James Milner and Jordan Henderson.
