Lionel Messi was the architect of Inter Miami’s road to MLS Cup glory as he starred in the final to lift the David Beckham-owned club to its first-ever league title.

Lionel Messi delivered a dazzling performance to lead Inter Miami to their first-ever MLS Cup, orchestrating a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in a thrilling final on Saturday.

The Argentine superstar had a hand in all three goals, providing two assists and playing a key role in the third to ignite euphoric celebrations at a packed Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

"This is the moment I've been waiting for, and that we as a team have been waiting for," said Messi, who was named the MLS Cup Most Valuable Player.

Inter Miami's path to glory was far from straightforward. An early own goal from Vancouver's Edier Ocampo gave the home side the lead, but Ali Ahmed's stunning second-half equalizer left the match hanging in the balance.

David Beckham Over the Moon

With the game on a knife's edge, Messi stepped up. He first set up fellow Argentine international Rodrigo De Paul to restore Miami's lead before delivering the decisive pass for Tadeo Allende to score in stoppage time, sealing the historic win.

The victory is a monumental achievement for Inter Miami and a personal triumph for co-owner David Beckham. The former England captain's vision of building a successful club in South Florida has now been fully realized.

"There were a lot of sleepless nights, but I always believed," Beckham said. "I always believed in bringing the team here, and when I found the right partners, I knew anything was possible. We always promised our fans that we would bring success, and bring the best players, and today we've achieved that."

For much of the match, Vancouver, led by German legend Thomas Mueller, appeared to be the stronger side. After recovering from Ocampo's unfortunate eighth-minute own goal, they leveled the score through Ahmed in the 60th minute and nearly took the lead moments later when Emmanuel Sabbi's shot struck both posts.

Costly Errors Prove Decisive

Just as the Whitecaps seemed to be in control, a critical error turned the tide. Midfielder Andres Cubas was dispossessed by Messi, who surged forward and found De Paul for a clinical finish that put Miami ahead 2-1 against the run of play.

Vancouver struggled to recover from that blow, and Miami put the game to bed in injury time when Messi threaded a pass to Allende, who made no mistake to make it 3-1.

"We made a few mistakes and they took advantage of them," admitted Whitecaps coach Jesper Sorensen. "The ball dropped for Messi and he made the pass to Rodrigo. A game is decided in a few moments, and when you play Miami, they have the players to take advantage of these moments."

The championship marks the pinnacle of Inter Miami's journey since joining the league as an expansion team in 2020, a rise accelerated by the sensational signing of World Cup winner Messi in 2023.

Saturday's final also served as a fitting farewell for two of Messi's former Barcelona teammates, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, who are now retiring from professional football.
