The former Harambee Stars Defender has explained why fans should have no reason to put pressure on McCarthy after the side drew 0-0 with Chad in a friendly last Saturday.

Former Harambee Stars defender James Situma has thrown his weight behind national team head coach Benni McCarthy, urging fans and stakeholders to exercise patience as the South African embarks on what he calls a rebuilding journey.

McCarthy, who took over the Kenya job recently, is yet to register a win in his first three outings — a thrilling 3-3 draw against Gambia , a narrow 2-1 loss to Gabon, both World Cup qualifiers, and a goalless draw against lowly-ranked Chad on Saturday in a friendly played at the Stade de Marrakech in Morocco.

Despite the winless run, Situma insists there are signs of progress.

Situma: Trust McCarthy’s Process

“I saw the boys dominate the game, which tells you every player on the pitch wanted to win,” he said as quoted on Citizen Digital.

"But fans must understand the coach is still in the process of building a team, and players need time to understand his playing philosophy before we start seeing consistent results,” Situma explained.

The former AFC Leopards, Sofapaka and Tusker man pointed to the many changes McCarthy has made to the squad, saying that the frequent experimentation is part of a larger plan.

“He’s still testing different combinations, and that takes time. He came in when the league was almost done, and that makes it difficult to fully assess and integrate local talent. So we should not be quick to judge.”

Situma: We Have the Talent to Perform at CHAN

McCarthy’s challenges are piling up fast. Beyond the World Cup qualifiers, his immediate task is preparing for the African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Kenya will co-host alongside Tanzania and Uganda this August.

Looking further ahead, the pressure will only intensify as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) — arguably the biggest football event in the country’s history.

Still, Situma is confident that McCarthy can guide the team to success — starting with a strong CHAN campaign on home soil.

“We have the talent, no doubt. And history shows we perform well at home in regional tournaments like Cecafa. CHAN won’t be any different. I’m optimistic Kenya will shine.”

With expectations high and results still pending, Situma’s message is clear: building a winning national team takes time, and the football fraternity must give McCarthy the space to do just that.
