Why Harambee Starlets coach is eager to integrate Junior Starlets U-17 Women's World Cup break-out stars
Harambee Starlets coach Beldine Odemba is looking to integrate youngsters from Junior Starlets' historic U-17 FIFA Women's World Cup with some already receiving call-ups to the senior side.
The qualifiers officially commence on Friday, January 10, 2025, with the first leg of the first round taking place between January 10 and 12.
The second leg will follow a week later, from January 17 to 19. Kenya’s Junior Starlets, however, will not feature in this initial stage. Instead, they will join the competition in the second round, scheduled for March.
In March, the Junior Starlets will face the winner of the Namibia vs. Uganda matchup from the first round.
The second-round clashes are set as two-legged ties, with the first leg occurring between March 7 and 9 and the return leg between March 14 and 16.
A victory in this round would propel Kenya to the third round of the qualifiers, where they would face the winner of either Egypt vs. Cameroon or Zimbabwe vs. Ethiopia in another two-legged contest.
The Junior Starlets are aiming for their second consecutive qualification to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
They made history in 2024 by becoming the first-ever Kenyan national team to qualify for a FIFA World Cup at any level. In their debut appearance, the team achieved a historic milestone by defeating Mexico in the group stages.
Although they did not progress beyond the group phase, where they faced formidable opponents including England and North Korea, the victory over Mexico marked a significant achievement for Kenyan football on the global stage.
