Former AFC Leopards winger Marcellus Ingotsi admits costly error when signing for the club.

Former AFC Leopards winger Marcellus 'Sheye' Ingotsi has shared insights into his football journey, including a pivotal mistake he made when signing his first professional contract with the club.

Speaking on a recent episode of the TikiTaka show, Ingotsi reflected on his career, his childhood inspiration, and the lessons he learned along the way.

Growing up, Ingotsi’s football dreams revolved solely around playing for AFC Leopards while plying his trade at Kitale's football hub, St. Anthony. His cousin, Edwin Wafula, a former Leopards defender, played a crucial role in nurturing this ambition.

“Growing up, my vision was playing for AFC Leopards. It was the only team on my mind. I didn’t know any other teams because of my cousin Edu (Edwin Wafula),” Ingotsi said.

“Even playing back at home, I had kits for AFC Leopards because he used to bring them to me. When I was breaking into the senior team, he was leaving for Nzoia and gave me the encouragement I needed.”

Ingotsi joined the den with immense pride and excitement but admitted to a costly error during the signing process.

“I was given a five-year contract. I made the mistake of not reading the contract,” he revealed.

“I had so much pride in signing for AFC that I didn’t bother to read it. I saw it as a waste of time," he said admitting the lack of oversight on his part.

The costly error meant the pacy winger had no performance related bonus clauses on his contract, only settling for his salary which he admits was duly paid.

“My stay at AFC Leopards was so nice, but I didn’t stay for long—I only stayed for one year,” he added. “The salary was paid on time, but I never received bonuses.”

Despite his contract oversight, Ingotsi cherishes his time at Leopards. He quickly made his mark in 2017, scoring on his debut after coming on as a substitute. Over the course of the season, he made ten appearances, scoring another goal and providing two assists.

After leaving AFC Leopards in 2018, Ingotsi transitioned to Posta Rangers, a move facilitated by the support of his former club. While he regrets not thoroughly reviewing his contract, his time with Leopards remains a cherished chapter in his career.

"But I truly respect AFC, they held my hand even during my move to Posta Rangers," he remarked with admiration for the club.
