If there is one thing clear, it is Gabby Thomas choosing health over competition after injury forces her out of Worlds.

Olympic 200m gold medalist Gabby Thomas has reacted to the flood of support she has been getting from fans and athletes after announcing she was withdrawing from this year's 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.

Thomas, who had booked her place for the 200m race after securing a third position at the U.S. Nationals over this summer, confirmed that an ongoing Achilles problem had forced her to pull out of competition.

The Olympic medalist and Harvard alum admitted that she had been playing around with the injury the entire season, one which significantly reduced her ability to train at the highest levels.

Even as she was eager to return to the international level competing as a member of Team USA once more, Thomas made the tough decision of prioritizing long-term health over short-term competition.

"Wowow I was a little nervous about sharing the news of my injury, but have been met with so much love from partners and track supporters. It means absolutely everything. Love track and can't wait to get back to being me and racing the best in the world. See you guys soon ????????," Thomas posted on her X (previously Twitter), expressing gratitude for all the support she has had.

The track and field community responded swiftly, with prominent names such as Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit and Athlos', sending get-well wishes.

Disappointment but Determination

Thomas admitted in a statement that it was one of the toughest career choices she had ever made by confessing to missing the Tokyo World Championships.

The 27-year-old athlete conceded that she would be missed by fans but emphasized the necessity for self-sustenance in an exacting sport.

"I know it will be a disappointment to some of the fans that like the song, but I've finally understood that it's OK to be human and take care of myself. As an athlete you always want to keep grinding, but sometimes you just can't outwork an injury," Thomas said.

This came after a highly successful performance at the 2023 Budapest World Championships, where she took the gold in the 4x100m relay and silver in the 200m.

Despite the disappointment, Thomas is positive about her recovery as well as the future.

She assured that she will have to undergo a rigorous rehabilitation program to make her Achilles stronger and be ready in time for the next competition cycle.

"I wish to train seriously on the track, but it's extremely tough to do so while attempting to combat an injury," she confessed. "For the moment, healing must be the priority."

Fan and peer support could be crucial as Thomas sets off on this quest.
