Reynold Cheruiyot has given reasons why he feels Team Kenya has a chance of reclaiming the 1,500m gold medal that has been eluding them at the World Championships.

Reynold Cheruiyot has expressed confidence in Kenya returning the 1,500m gold that has eluded them since their last title in 2019.

Kenya will head to this year’s edition of the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan with an experienced team of Reynold Cheruiyot, Timothy Cheruiyot, the last man to win the title, and Brain Komen.

The three sealed their tickets to Tokyo at the Athletics Kenya World Championships trials at Ulinzi Complex on Tuesday after Reynold Cheruiyot pulled off an upset as he eclipsed Timothy Cheruiyot at the line with Komen completing the podium.

Reynold says the win is a culmination of a calculated strategy in training which has seen him focus on fine tuning his finish.

“During my training, I normally focus a lot on the last 400m I have been boosting my 100m speed so I made sure I push to get a good position,” he said.

Team Kenya Has Found Ingebrigtsen’s 'Medicine'

“I am now satisfied because in the last two weeks, I have not slept. I have just been thinking about this race. I saw guys running 3 something but I was still struggling but I am thankful that I made the team today.”

Reynold says winning the elusive gold will not just be about him but rather a team effort as he believes that is the only way to beat world champion Josh Kerr and world silver medalist Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

“Now, all of us 1,500m runners are going in camp to analyse and see what we can do to make sure we bring something from Tokyo,” he added, explaining what gives him confidence of flooring Ingebrigtsen and Kerr.

“We have found his [Ingebrigtsen] medicine so we are going to prepare well. You saw Phanuel [Koech] managed to beat Kerr last week [at London Diamond League] after a great race and we are going back to camp to make sure all of us are on the podium.”

Team Kenya will have to be at their best to claim the gold medal as there is stiff competition expected in Tokyo from the aforementioned as well as Americans led by Olympics champion Cole Hocker.
