Marathon world record holder Ruth Chepngetich faces a provisional doping suspension, placing her future in athletics under serious uncertainty.

Ruth Chepngetich, the Kenyan long-distance sensation and reigning women’s marathon world record holder, finds herself at the center of a doping storm that could alter the trajectory of her remarkable career.

The 30-year-old athlete, who stunned the world by running 2:09:56 at the 2024 Chicago Marathon, was provisionally suspended after testing positive for a banned substance, casting doubt over her immediate future in the sport.

Chepngetich’s ascent to the pinnacle of road running had been meteoric.

A former world champion in the marathon and three-time winner of the Chicago Marathon, she became the first woman to run under both 2:11 and 2:10, rewriting the limits of endurance and speed in the women’s marathon.

Her world record in Chicago stood as one of the most celebrated achievements in athletics in recent years, earning her global acclaim and cementing her status among the greatest marathoners in history.

However, the celebrations were short-lived in March 2025 as Chepngetich submitted an out-of-competition urine sample that tested positive for Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), a diuretic and masking agent banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

The sample, reportedly containing over 3,800 nanograms per milliliter, almost 200 times the reporting threshold, was flagged by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) in early April.

Upon notification, Chepngetich cooperated with the investigation and voluntarily accepted a provisional suspension on April 19, before the AIU formally charged her and enforced its own suspension on July 17.

What Next for Chepngetich

The suspension places Chepngetich’s career at a crossroads.

Although HCTZ is classified as a "specified substance" under WADA rules, meaning sanctions can vary based on intent or negligence, the standard penalty for a first-time offense remains up to two years.

Her willingness to accept the provisional suspension early could work in her favor during the hearing, potentially reducing the ban’s duration.

However, unless she is able to provide compelling evidence to clear her name, she could be ineligible to compete until at least April 2027.

For now, Chepngetich awaits a disciplinary hearing, where a tribunal will examine the circumstances surrounding her case.

She retains the right to contest the charge, argue for mitigating circumstances, or appeal any ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

While the AIU has not suggested retroactively stripping her of past victories, the timing of the positive test, six months after her record-breaking run in Chicago, has cast a shadow over that historic achievement.

Although her world record remains officially recognized for now, public confidence in its legitimacy is wavering.

Beyond the legal process, Chepngetich faces a personal and professional reckoning.

Once hailed as the embodiment of Kenya’s distance running excellence, she is now one of several top Kenyan athletes entangled in doping controversies.

The growing list of suspended runners has intensified scrutiny of the country’s athletics program and raised fresh concerns about anti-doping enforcement and athlete education.

For Chepngetich, the path to redemption will require more than a clean test, it will demand transparency, accountability, and an unwavering commitment to rebuilding her reputation.

But even with a comeback, the stain of a doping case can be indelible, and regaining trust from fans, sponsors, and fellow athletes could be her greatest challenge yet.
