Masai Russell withdraws from the Philadelphia track meet due to a personal setback after setting a world-leading hurdles record.

Olympic gold medalist Masai Russell has stunned the track and field world by withdrawing from the upcoming Grand Slam Track (GST) race in Philadelphia, just days before her highly-anticipated face-off with Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.

The prestigious event, slated for Saturday, May 31 to Sunday, June 1 at Franklin Field, was set to be the second major showdown in the GST 100m hurdles calendar.

Russell, who recently set the track ablaze in Miami with a world-leading time, was considered the frontrunner for the gold once again.

However, the American hurdler shocked fans with a personal announcement on Instagram, explaining her sudden absence from the Philadelphia stop of the series.

“I am heartbroken to share that I won't be competing in Philadelphia this weekend due to a temporary personal interruption. While this setback is tough, I'm focusing on what lies ahead and will be cheering on all the incredible athletes competing. To all my amazing fans, your support means the world to me and keeps me going every day. Wishing everyone the best of luck. Go out there and SHINE. See you in LA!” she wrote.

Miami Magic: A Record-Breaking Run

Russell was last seen competing at the Grand Slam Track Miami event held from May 2 to May 4 at the Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar, Florida.

She stunned the field with a world-leading and national-record time of 12.17 seconds in the 100m hurdles, outpacing strong competitors Tia Jones (12.19s) and Ackera Nugent (12.34s).

The electric performance placed Russell at the top of the global leaderboard, cementing her status as a gold-medal favorite heading into the Olympic season.

Before that, she also competed at the GST’s inaugural stop in Jamaica but missed out on the podium. Philadelphia was expected to be her redemption and a marquee duel with fellow Olympic star McLaughlin-Levrone.

Russell's absence will undoubtedly be felt on the track, but her fans have already begun rallying around her, showing overwhelming support online after her emotional announcement.

Driven by a Mother’s Legacy

While her latest decision comes as a surprise, Russell has never shied away from discussing the emotional depths behind her athletic journey.

Earlier this year, during an appearance on the Journey to Gold Zone podcast hosted by USA Track and Field, Russell opened up about the source of her strength and resilience—her mother.

“Yeah, I think for me, this is like a different answer that a lot of people probably will be confused about. But, my biggest inspiration is honestly my mother because she is a doctor. She's a black doctor. She is the first person in our family to do anything that she's ever done. And I mean, I'm kind of the same way. Like I just kind of follow her lead.”

“She showed what hard work looked like. She showed what dedication looked like, even though it wasn't on the track like me. She showed what grind was…I was able to see that as a young girl. I was looking up, I looked up to my mom,” she added.

Russell began her 2025 season with a solid performance at the Texas Tech Corky Classic in January, competing in the 60m hurdles.

Since then, she has built momentum, making her Philadelphia withdrawal all the more heartbreaking for fans eager to see her build on her Miami heroics.

Though she will not start line this weekend, Russell’s promise to return in Los Angeles hints at a determined comeback.
