Julien Alfred Destroys Home Favourites Dina Asher-Smith and Amy Hunt to Claim London Bragging Rights

Olympics 100m champion Julien Alfred displayed that she still got it in the 200m when she floored her rivals at the London Diamond League on Saturday.

Julien Alfred made a major statement of intent when she destroyed the field to win the 200m at the London Diamond League on Saturday.

In a strong field that had home favourites Dina Asher-Smith, Amy Hunt and Daryll Neita, Alfred had no mercy for either of them, as well as the rest of the cast, that included Irishwoman Rhasidat Adeleke and Jamaican Ashanti Moore.

When the start gun went off, Alfred stayed in touch with the rest but at the bend, she put on the afterburners to beat her rivals by a big gap, winning the race in a new meeting record time of 21.71 seconds.

Asher-Smith was second, after clocking a season’s best 22.25 seconds, followed by British compatriot Hunt, who timed a personal best 22.31 seconds.

Alfred Hitting Best Form Ahead of World Championships

It was the third 200m race for Alfred this season and she looks in good shape to go for the double at the World Championships in Tokyo in September as she has also remained untouchable in 100m.

The St Lucia native says the victory is a good build-up for Tokyo although she admits it was not easy to control the race even though it looked easy from a fans’ perspective.

“It was a strong first 150 metres of the race, and I managed to control it to finish strongly. It was a great race for me, and races like this give me a lot of confidence as we get closer to Tokyo,” said Alfred.

“I did the 200m last year before the Olympics and I finished second, but seeing how I ran today and how comfortable I felt, I am a lot more confident in my 200m heading into the Worlds.”

Alfred lowered the London meeting record of 21.82 seconds set by Olympics champion Gabby Thomas last year.
