Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone explains who inspires her on track and how her journey to the top has been nothing short of extraodinary.

Four-time Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is a household name and a global icon who has been consistent throughout her career.

At 25, the American is entering her prime and a crucial stage in her development. While she has always gone about her track routine normally, the 400m hurdler has opened up about how her mother is her big motivation.

Speaking to World Athletics prior to the World Women's Day on March 8, the 400mH world record holder added that her mother's selflessness and resilience makes her yearn for success on the track, and that is why she has been able to overcome every hurdle she has encountered so far in her career.

"The women who have inspired me most in my life? I would say my mom. Just her resilience, her just joy of being able to be a role model for other people. And I think of her selflessness, I think that's something even in sports that can really be emulated in just how you conduct yourself," McLaughlin said.

The double Olympic champion reckons that the desire to become better with each passing day is borne out of the appetite to push herself beyond boundaries. This, she said, comes from her never-ending quest for success.

"I love pushing boundaries whether it's in track and field or just in life and myself. And being able to step on the track every single day and try to figure out how to be better than the day before. I think that's something I pride myself on, and I want to continue to show that it is possible with hard work and determination. The road is not always going to be easy but it's about your attitude and how you face those challenges that is going to help you shape you as a person, as a woman, as an athlete."

Ahead of the 2025 season, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone signed with Michael Johnson's Grand Slam Track League, becoming the first athlete to join the league in June 2024.

The three-time world champion will hope to show her class again at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, following her record-breaking performance at the Paris Olympic Games. McLaughlin-Levrone is the first track athlete to break four world records in the same event; setting four world records during 13 months, and was the first woman to break the 52-second (June 2021) and 51-second (July 2022) barriers in the 400m hurdles.

She holds the current world U20 record of 53.60 seconds, having achieved a junior personal best of 52.75 s (not ratified), with both marks set in 2018. Aside from McLaughlin-Levrone, only three other women have ever broken the 52 second barrier, and only one other has broken 51.
