Jacob Kiplimo has opened up on the strategy he implemented to beat Kenyans one more time at the just concluded World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo has opened up on how he managed to silence his competitors one more time at the just concluded World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

Kiplimo explained that he was aware of the tough competition from Kenyans and Ethiopians and he had to think through a strategy that would work in his favour. The Ugandan noted that it was not easy winning this year’s race as compared to last year due to the opposition.

The world half marathon record holder had to stay with the leading pack without much of controlling the race until a few kilometers to go when he decided to take charge fully. He observed that the other runners were pushing themselves to the limits and soon they would burn out.

“It feels good to have defended my title…My strategy was just to stay with the pack until maybe the last 3km to go and then I try to push it. I saw the guys were pushing a lot and the pace was too high but I decided to maintain my pace and kept going.

“I used my similar tactics from last year because I knew everyone was strong and I had to stay with them before deciding to unleash a finishing kick. This one was harder than last year because there were many great athletes…last year was a bit easier and I did not struggle as much,” he said.

Kiplimo also noted that he wants to join the list of legendary cross-country runners like Geoffrey Kamworor by winning more titles.

“I think it is good because I want to be like the legends and I want to be the GOAT…cross country is very good when you want to build up for track events. It’s very good for mileage,” he said.
