ATHLETICS Eric Kiptanui to open his season at Kigali International Peace Marathon

The last time he raced competitively was at the Chicago Marathon in 2022 where he finished ninth.

The 2021 Xiamen Marathon champion Eric Kiptanui is set to open his season at the Kigali International Peace Marathon on Sunday, June 11.

Kiptanui has a Personal Best time of 2:05:47 and the last time he raced competitively was at the Chicago Marathon in 2022 where he finished ninth.

The 33-year-old now joins John Hakizimana, who has also announced to be taking part in the event. Hakizimana, 26, will be racing on home soil and will be looking to upset the visitors.

He has a Personal Best time of 2:08:18 over the 42km distance and he has already competed in two races where he finished in the podium bracket in both. He opened his season with a third-place finish at the Milano Marathon and then finished second at the Padova Half Marathon.

In the women’s elite field, Ethiopia’s Muluhabt Tsega is the top female athlete who has been announced so far. Tsega has a Personal Best time of 2:24:23 and has already competed at the Zurich Marathon where she finished sixth.

The race organisers of the event have revealed that they expect over 10,000 athletes are expected to register to participate in the 18th edition of the event.

So far, 2,000 local and foreign athletes have completed registration and for the first time, the race will be attended by nine World Marathon Majors athletes. The organisers are yet to share the official start lists of the participants.

Meanwhile, in 2021, the marathon was awarded a World Athletics Label, an award that recognizes high standards in event organization, safety and runner experience as well as the application of the World Athletics rules and regulations.

The label also categorizes elite competitions with implications on ranking points available to international elite athletes and Olympics and World Championships qualification slots offered by the highest categorized competitions.
