Several top athletes who qualified for the Zurich Diamond League Finals 2025 will surprisingly miss out, reshaping anticipation for the event

On Wednesday afternoon, there is enthusiasm in the air regarding the Zurich Diamond League Finals 2025.

Spectators will get to see great performances by some of the world's best athletes, with Noah Lyles, Letsile Tebogo, Julien Alfred, and Mondo Duplantis being the headliners throughout the two-day extravaganza.

While there are many big names going to light up the track, there also appear to be some big omissions.

Despite qualifying with their excellent Diamond League showings, five star performers will not be present in Zurich.

Pulse Sports looks at those most missed.

5. Melissa Jefferson-Wooden

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden won the women's 100m at the Silesia Diamond League

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden has been among the most talked-about names among female sprinters this year. With impressive 100m victories in Eugene, Silesia, and Brussels, she accumulated 24 points to earn a good qualification for Zurich.

Despite being qualified, Jefferson-Wooden has decided to skip the Zurich finals. After Brussels victory, she said her top priority was always to stay healthy and prepare for the World Championships in Tokyo. Over-racing is a risk more than the allure of another Diamond League title for her.

Her withdrawal totally reworks the 100m field. Without Jefferson-Wooden's fast opening and fast finishes, the sport is deprived of one of its brightest dangers, and fans can only dream about what might have been if she was among the world's best on the starting list.

4. Tara Davis-Woodhall

Women's long jump will never be the same without Tara Davis-Woodhall.

Her performances placed her in the favorites list for Zurich, but her name is absent from the entry list. The American phenomenon has seemingly redirected her interest toward the World Championships, where she is every chance of medaling.

Davis-Woodhall's non-attendance takes some of the excitement out of the field events. With her charisma and crowd-winning jumps, she has built up a broad following, and Zurich spectators are sure to miss her sparky presence.

3. Masai Russell

Olympic champion Masai Russell set a new Diamond League Record in Silesia

Masai Russell, the reigning Olympic champion in the 100m hurdles, carved out a superb Diamond League season. She bagged 20 points thanks to standout podium finishes, including a victory in Silesia and a second place in Lausanne.

Although she has delivered some brilliant performances, Russell will not be racing in Zurich. Instead, she's tactically scheduling her season to peak at the World Championships in Tokyo, where she will look to add another global medal to her CV.

In the obstacles event, her absence is a significant loss. Russell's consistency and explosiveness were making her favorite to claim the crown, and fans will have to wait until Tokyo to see her compete again.

2. Shericka Jackson

The absence of Shericka Jackson, one of the greatest 200m runners of all time, is therefore a major news story. She secured her qualifying mark at Xiamen and Silesia, where she was second and then first.

Even that, though, will be the exception. Jackson won't be appearing in Zurich's starting blocks. Her decision is a conscious one, designed to hone training in advance of the World Championships, where she should be a gold favorite.

Her withdrawal deprives Zurich of a blockbuster contest in the women's 200m. Fans eagerly anticipated pitting her against upstarts like Julien Alfred, but the wait will be until Tokyo.

1. Kishane Thompson

Kishane Thompson's withdrawal is likely the most disappointing for sprint fans.

The Jamaican has been the fastest in the world this season, setting scorching times in Shanghai, Eugene, and Silesia to make him the man to beat.

His campaign took a dip, however, with a shin issue contracted following the Silesia meeting. Not only did it rule him out of Lausanne, but Zurich as well.
