Premier League: Liverpool dealt indirect transfer blow after Brighton sign Newcastle's Minteh

Liverpool and Arne Slot may have to consider other transfer targets after Yankuba Minteh completed a switch to Brighton & Hove Albion from Newcastle United.

Minteh spent last season on loan at Feyenoord, scoring 10 league goals in the Eredivisie in 27 appearances, and the Magpies considered the 19-year-old Gambian as a saleable asset to boost compliance with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR). 

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool showed interest in Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon, keen to tempt the Magpies into selling their star attacker but faced reluctance from Eddie Howe’s side to let go of their much-improved Englishman, whose preference was a different sale. 

Despite negotiations, the clubs could not agree on a fee, and Brighton’s seeming purchase of Minteh possibly puts paid to any prospect Liverpool had of signing Gordon. 

As it stands, Gordon is likely to continue at Newcastle next season despite rumours linking him and a few of the star players at St James’ Park with a move away. 

The wide attacker is currently with England’s squad at Euro 2024, with Gareth Southgate’s men facing Slovakia on Sunday hoping to avoid a last-16 exit.
