Oustanding stat shows how Emi Martinez keeps saving Messi's Argentina
Emiliano Martinez continued his heroics for Argentina from the penalty spot, as he made two stunning saves in the shootout against Ecuador to send the Albiceleste to the semi-final of the Copa America. His stats in penalty shootouts underscore his competence in that aspect of goalkeeping.
Martinez penalty heroics
The Aston Villa goalkeeper's debut for Argentina has coincided with their period of sustained success. He has established himself as one of the most important players for Lionel Scaloni's side, and his shot-stopping prowess has been almost as important as Lionel Messi’s goal-scoring for the team.
He was integral in their run towards winning the last Copa America, making saves in the penalty shootout against Colombia.
It was in the 2022 World Cup, however, that his legend reached god-like status. He made two saves against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals of the competition, stopping attempts from Virgil Van Dijk and Steven Berghuis.
And in the final, he saved Kingsley Coman's attempt and put off Aurelien Tchouameni, who sent his attempt wide.
Martinez's heroics have continued well past the World Cup, and in the early hours of this morning, he helped Argentina reach the semi-final of Copa America by saving two penalties.
Martinez's stellar numbers
The 28-year-old has faced 24 penalties between the sticks for Argentina and has only conceded 12 goals, only 50%, a remarkable ratio.
