Marseille land Man United misfit: Mason Greenwood unveiled as replacement for Arsenal icon Aubameyang
Olympique de Marseille have pulled off a major coup by signing Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood as a replacement for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The 22-year-old English star has left Old Trafford and joined the French club on a permanent transfer, with Marseille confirming the deal.
Greenwood becomes United's fourth most expensive signing, after Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku and Angel Di Maria.
Greenwood leaves Man United for Marseille
Greenwood, who made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United since his debut in 2019, will now wear the number 10 shirt vacated by former Arsenal skipper Aubameyang.
The Ligue 1 giants reached an agreement with the Red Devils over a £ 30 million deal for the troubled forward, who put pen to paper to a contract until 2029 after passing his medical.
Greenwood spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain, where he enjoyed a remarkable renaissance, scoring 10 goals and providing 6 assists in 36 appearances to be named the club's Player of the Season.
However, the Spaniards have been left heartbroken as Marseille swooped in to secure his signature permanently, dashing Getafe's hopes of keeping the former England international.
ADIOS, AUBAMEYANG
Marseille's new signing Greenwood will now have big shoes to fill, with the Ligue 1 club losing their former talisman Aubameyang.
The Gabonese striker, who spent the 2023-2024 season with the Olympiens, became the top scorer in the history of the Europa League, netting 30 goals.
But the 35-year-old is now leaving OM for Saudi Arabian side Al-Qadsiah, as the French giants look to the future with the exciting Greenwood.
Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed the details of the deal, with Marseille pulling off a real coup to land the United misfit.
Greenwood will be hoping to reignite his career in France, having fallen out of favour at Old Trafford over domestic violence.
But the pressure will be on the young Englishman to fill the void left by the departing Aubameyang.
