"It's not my kind of football" - Barcelona goalkeeper Szczesny criticises team's style
The goalkeeper played a part in Barcelona's success last season after joining the La Liga champions.
The Polish keeper recently extended his contract with Barcelona until 2027, but hasn't hesitated to critique both his coach and teammates.
What Szczesny said
Szczesny didn't think twice about potentially damaging his relationship with manager Hansi Flick: "This isn't my kind of football. What Barcelona did last season was amazing.
"It's great for the spectators. But this isn't my type of football, and even success doesn't change my opinion about the style I prefer."
The Pole won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup with Barcelona last season, but they were knocked out of the Champions League semi-finals by Inter Milan. Barça conceded seven goals across the two legs.
"The team could recognize the dangers of the game so that they don't make the same mistakes repeatedly for 90 minutes. But that's just my opinion. I'm a goalkeeper."
It hurts when we're 4-0 up and the guys are so determined to make it 5-0 they just forget everything else. A goalkeeper always wants a clean sheet.
"But the guys want to keep scoring goals and having fun, and as a goalkeeper, that's difficult for me," Szczesny commented on the Polish YouTube channel "Foot Truck", via Abola.
Fans, however, are thrilled with the team's attacking style. Barcelona scored 102 goals last season, 24 more than rivals Real Madrid. And Szczesny managed 14 clean sheets in his 30 appearances.
Despite his contract extension, the Pole will not be the starting goalkeeper next season. The club has signed Joan Garcia (24/Espanyol Barcelona), who will be given the number one shirt, while former captain Marc-André ter Stegen has become the third-choice keeper. Ter Stegen will undergo back surgery and be sidelined for around three months.
