In a show of honesty, Lionel Messi admitted to rooting against Real Madrid in the Champions League final because of his loyalty to Barcelona.
What Messi said
In his interview with ESPN Argentina's Arevalo Martin, per Albiceleste Talk, Messi revealed that he watched the Champions League final and supported Borussia Dortmund on the day.
He explained that he is a Barcelona fan, hence his desire to see Real Madrid lose, and said he would expect a Los Blancos fan to do the same if Barcelona made the Champions League final.
The Blaugrana last made the UCL final in 2015 when they beat Juventus 3-1, and Messi was in the team then. Messi hopes that Barcelona will end their nine-year wait for the Champions League, as he admitted that it has been a while since they won it.
“Champions League final? Yeah, we were supporting Dortmund obviously; I'm a Barcelona fan and if theoretically, Barcelona was in the final, Real Madrid fans would support the opponent too; that's how it is in football,” Messi said.
Since the childhood I'm a Barcelona fan; I love Barça, today I'm just a fan from afar and I hope we will fight for the Champions League again. It's been a long time since we won one."
Meanwhile, despite his affiliations with their rivals Barcelona, Messi admitted that Real Madrid were the best team in the world.
