He’s not strong defensively - AC Milan manager explains picking USA star over Chukwueze
Chukwueze has struggled to cement a starting berth in the AC Milan team and has mostly been used as a substitute.
The Super Eagles star has seen his place taken by Musah, who has been deployed as a winger due to his defensive solidity.
However, despite not having a starting shirt in the team, he showed his quality during the Coppa Italia against Sauossolo, scoring two goals in the 6-1 victory.
Fonseca speaks on Chukwueze
Fonseca has explained why he has always chosen to start Musah over Chukwueze, even though the latter was the obvious choice for the role.
In quotes relayed by Milan News, the Portuguese manager said, "I remember talking about Chukwu two games ago. He's adapting well. When we need this role on the right he's progressing.
"There's no problem with him. If we think he's stronger defensively than Musah, no. But he can play this role in some games."
The 22-year-old has contributed to AC Milan's recent form rise, and Chukwueze's inability to start is partly due to his performances.
The Nigerian player was given a start in the UEFA Champions League match against Slovan Bratislava, but he has been a substitute in the past two of the previous five Serie A games.
The bulk of Chukwueze's 50 appearances for AC Milan have come as a substitute and has scored only three goals in all competitions.
