"He's completely lost it" - Mikel Arteta ridiculed by fans after erroneous remark
Arsenal kicks off its Premier League campaign Sunday with an away game at Old Trafford against Manchester United, hoping to avoid dropping crucial points early in the title race.
After finishing second three seasons in a row, twice behind Manchester City and once behind Liverpool, Arteta sees his team's consistent performance as the key to finally winning that coveted title.
Arteta's press conference
During his press conference, he said, "You keep digging, digging, digging. And you have to keep digging, because one day you'll find the gold. That's it. That's how I was raised, that's how I was formed, and that's what I stick to," the head coach stated hopefully during the pre-match press conference.
He continued: "For three seasons, we've earned more points than any other team in this league. Now we have to do it in one season: one more point or the same number of points, but with a better goal difference than any other team. That's the goal."
However, despite his status as a tactical mastermind at Arsenal, Arteta's figures were slightly off. Over the past three full seasons, Arsenal amassed a total of 247 points: 84 in 2022/23, 89 in 2023/24, and 74 in 2024/25. Certainly not a bad total, but they are still surpassed by Pep Guardiola, Arteta's former mentor.
Manchester City has accumulated more points than Arsenal over the last three seasons, namely 251. This was immediately noticed by observant fans, who pointed out that Arteta's statement was incorrect, and delivered the necessary criticism.
Fans criticise Arteta
"How does this make any sense? The team with the most points per season wins the Premier League, not the one that accumulates the most points over several years. It's high time Arsenal got rid of this man, because he's completely lost it," one fan wrote on X, via Sports.
"Factually incorrect – in the past three seasons it's City 251, Arsenal 247, Liverpool 233. Second again," another reacted. "For three seasons we would have more points than any other team in this league… so where's the title then?" another fan remarked.
Arsenal plays its first game of the season on Sunday. The Premier League season opener was played on Friday by Liverpool and Bournemouth. Arne Slot's team won 4-2 at home.
