Cristiano Ronlado's influence - Barcelona star leaves for free in a baffling move to Al Nassr
A key player for FC Barcelona, starting center-back Inigo Martinez, is preparing to switch teams.
Despite having a year left on his contract, the 34-year-old will leave on a free transfer to Al Nassr, the Saudi Arabian team that boasts Cristiano Ronaldo among its ranks.
Inigo Martinez leaves for free
Why for free, considering he was a regular starter with 46 appearances last season? Because Barcelona want to offload his substantial salary, reported to be €14 million annually, according to The Athletic, via GSP.
Inigo's departure will allow the Blaugrana to register other players, something they are currently unable to do. However, this move doesn't entirely solve the Spanish champions' problems, as they still have expenses exceeding the limit allowed by regulations and will only be able to use €8.4 million of the €14 million freed up by Inigo's exit for their salary cap.
It's puzzling that Barcelona didn't request a transfer fee, especially given that state-backed Saudi teams are known for spending tens of millions of euros on established European players.
Inigo was a key part of Xavi's plans. The manager will, however, still have four other center-backs at his disposal: Pau Cubarsi, Ronald Araujo, Eric Garcia, and Andreas Christensen.
From a financial standpoint, the transfer makes sense for the player: Al Nassr will pay him a salary far exceeding what Barcelona could offer.
Meanwhile, Barcelona have made a move to find a replacement as they rival Real Madrid for Atletico Madrid youngster.
