Villarreal got a crucial 2-0 win in the course of their season against Real Sociedad in a tightly contested encounter.
The Yellow Submarines, buoyed by the crowd at La Ceramica, beat La Reale to stay within four points of Imanol Alguacil's men, who are in fourth place.
How it happened
Real Sociedad started on top, dictating play and dominating possession, but as has become the norm for La Reale, their possession lacked any sort of meaningful penetration.
Villarreal started to get into the game and were beginning to fashion chances, pegging the txuri-urdin back towards their own half, but they, like their opposition, could not find the back of the net during their period of dominance.
The second half was a mirror image of the first, save for the goals.
Imanol Alguacil's men pushed their hosts back and threatened to break ahead, but the final ball was lacking.
The game turned on its head, and Villarreal started to carry more danger than they did at any other point in the game.
The deadlock was soon broken when Martine Zubimendi fouled Chukwueze inside the box. Dani Parejo stepped up to take the resulting penalty and made no mistake, burying the ball in the back of the net.

Real Sociedad had a late flurry of attacks, which resulted in Jackson receiving his matching others, but the visitors did not manage to capitalise on the numerical advantage.
