Jurgen Klopp: Boniface's Alonso now favourite to take over at Liverpool
Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has emerged as the bookmarkers’ favourite to eventually succeed Jurgen Klopp as manager at Anfield.
Alonso, who currently coaches Nigeria’s Victor Boniface at Bayer Leverkusen, is being tipped to return to his old club once Klopp’s tenure comes to an end at the end of the current season.
Klopp to leave Liverpool
Pulse Sports reported that German tactician Klopp has announced that he will leave the Reds at the end of the 2023/2024 season.
The former Mainz and Borussia Dortmund boss confirmed his departure via a special video on the club’s official social media page on Friday afternoon.
“I love the staff, I love everything,” Klopp said. “That I still take this decision, shows you that I am convinced it's the one I have to take. It is that I am running out of energy.”
Klopp left Borussia Dortmund to the Premier League in October 2015 when he signed for Liverpool.
Alonso to leave Boniface
According to a report from Sporting Life, the Bayer man has been installed as the favourite to take over at Anfield.
Alonso has impressed in his role as the boss at BayArena, taking the club from a relegation position to the top of the Bundesliga, with Nigeria’s Boniface playing a key role.
With Leverkusen’s record-breaking campaign so far, the 40-year-old Spaniard has now emerged as the clear man to take over at Anfield.
The former World Cup winner spent five years at Liverpool and was a part of the Reds that lifted the 2005 UEFA Champions League.
