Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku will be out for up to four months after picking up a knee injury.

Nkunku, who moved from RB Leipzig from Chelsea at the end of June, sustained the injury during a pre-season friendly against Borussia Dortmund in the United States.

Chelsea said Nkunku will be out for an “extended period” in a statement confirming the injury and operation.

There were criticisms regarding the pitch where the game took place but Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino refused to point fingers for Nkunku’s injury.

“I think it was a bit unlucky in the situation,” Pochettino said after the match, “but we cannot complain about the pitch and blame the pitch for why he suffered the injury. For me, it was bad luck.”
