Anthony Gordon apologises to Newcastle fans and Van Dijk following dangerous tackle
Newcastle lost 3-2 to Liverpool on Monday night, following a late dramatic event at St. James' Park stadium.
The Magpies were reduced to 10 men in the first half after a late tackle from Anthony Gordon on Liverpool's captain, Virgil van Dijk.
After the game, Magpies legend Alan Shearer criticised Gordon, labelling his actions as "stupid."
Gordon apologises
England international Antony Gordon took to his Instagram profile to offer his apologies for his red card, as reported by Sportal.
"I want to sincerely apologise to my teammates and the fans. My intentions were pure. I was just trying to bring some energy into the game and mistimed the tackle.
"I also want to apologise to Virgil - I would never intentionally tackle someone like that. We spoke afterwards, and he knows that.
"More importantly, I'm very proud of the minutes I spent on the pitch and how we played tonight. The atmosphere you all create is what makes St. James' Park so special.
"I love everything we represent as a club. I will come back better, just like with every other setback I've faced. See you soon."
