38-year-old Modric beats Cristiano Ronaldo to EURO record but Italy crush Croatian hearts
Croatia's veteran midfield maestro Luka Modric defied his age to fire his side into the lead against Italy in their final group game at the EURO 2024.
But the Azzurri had the final say, snatching a dramatic late equaliser to seal their spot in the quarterfinals on Monday night.
Modric (38 years and 289 days) wrote his name in the record books when he pounced on the rebound after Budimir's shot was saved by the impressive Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Modric makes history
Having had his penalty saved earlier, redemption came when the Real Madrid star lashed the ball high into the net to give Croatia the advantage.
However, just when it seemed Croatia were heading through in second place, Italy substitute Zaccagni produced a moment of magic.
The 29-year-old collected a pass on the left before unleashing a stunning strike that sailed past Livaković and into the top corner.
Italy snatch late point
It was heartbreak for Modric and Croatia, who had to settle for a share of the spoils after a dramatic late show.
But the veteran midfielder can at least console himself with the historic achievement of becoming the oldest-ever goalscorer in European Championship history.
This latest landmark in Modric's illustrious career is sure to spark renewed calls for the diminutive orchestrator to be regarded as one of the all-time greats of the game.
At 38 years young, Modric shows no signs of slowing down. Croatia will be hoping their midfield maestro can lead them to glory in the knockout stages.
But Italy have booked their place in the quarter-finals, with Zaccagni's late heroics ensuring the Azzurri progress as group runners-up.
