The Lakers hockey club players will not be eligible to play for one year and the officials have been banned for five years, with hefty financial sanctions to be paid by March next year.

The Africa Hockey Federation has slapped the Kisumu Women’s Hockey Club, Lakers, officials with a five-year ban and a fine of approximately Ksh 342, 000 before the end of March 2024.

According to a press statement from the federation, the club has been sanctioned for misconduct during the 25th Edition of the Africa Cup of Clubs Championships (ACCC) that was held in Blantyre, Malawi between November 18 and 26.

The ban officially began on December 18 and it will affect the Team Manager, John Paul Otieno, Austin Antony Onyango Tuju (Head Coach), Elizabeth Awuor Obong’o (Assistant Coach), and Robert Oketch (Assistant Team Manager).

The officials sanctioned are also required to pay a fine of Ksh 170,800 each to be paid before March 2024 to the African Federation.

There will also be a total ban from all forms of Hockey (local and international) for one year starting December 8 for all the players that were on the team sheet during the tournament in Malawi regardless of whether any of them is registered in Lakers club or any other clubs.

According to the Federation, the Lakers fielded ineligible players in the tournament and interrupted the final match between the Ghana Revenue Authority and Blazers.

Before the final match, the tournament director had communicated to the team that following investigations they had fielded non-registered players thus leading to their disqualification, and were not to play in the finals as earlier planned.

Following the above communication, AfHF Kenya Hockey Union summoned the above parties and transmitted the resolutions and sanctions on the 22nd of December, 2023.

The affected parties are free to lodge their appeals to AHF through the Kenya Hockey Union Executive Board.
