A look at some of the biggest winners from Benni McCarthy's latest Harambee Stars squad ahead of their games against Madagascar and Comoros.
The Harambee Stars’ latest squad announcement by head coach Benni McCarthy has stirred excitement and debate in equal measure — and for good reason.
The South African tactician, who has steadily injected fresh energy and tactical structure since taking over, continues to reward players showing consistency, hunger, and form at club level.
With two friendly matches lined up against Madagascar and Comoros, McCarthy’s selections offer a glimpse into the evolving identity of a team still under reconstruction but steadily finding its rhythm.

Ovella Ochieng, who left AFC Leopards to join Nairobi United in the off season, has reflected on his time with Ingwe, his plans at Nairobi United as well as hopes to impress Benni McCarthy for Harambee Stars.
Beyond the star names, several players have emerged as big winners — either earning deserved recalls or receiving the nod for the first time under McCarthy’s tenure.
Here are five players who stand out as the biggest beneficiaries of this latest call-up.
Ovella Ochieng
Ovella Ochieng has made a return to the national team for the first time since October 2023, when he was an unused substitute against Russia during a camp in Turkey under former coach Engin Firat.
Since then, he has had to work hard to find a club, and he did by signing for AFC Leopards in 2024, where he spent a year before moving to Nairobi United, a club he has started his career on a high with, even helping them reach the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup.
With the side still yet to have reliable wingers, this will be Ochieng’s chance to show why he was trusted by Stanley Okumbi and Sebastian Migne, two former Stars coaches who put their trust in him early in his career.

Celta Vigo Reacts to Aldrine Kibet’s Maiden Harambee Stars Call-Up
Spanish side Celta Vigo has expressed delight at the inclusion of youngster Aldrine Kibet in the Harambee Stars squad for next month’s friendly matches.
He will be competing for a starting berth with Job Ochieng, Boniface Muchiri and Adam Wilson on the flanks in order to impress Benni McCarthy.
Aldrine Kibet
Aldrine Kibet has earned a call up to the side for the first time since June 2024 during the COSAFA Cup in South Africa.
Kibet recently completed a move to Celta Vigo B from the Nastic Soccer Academy, and there is plenty of excitement about his future with the national side.
For the two upcoming friendlies against Madagascar and Comoros, this will be a glorious opportunity for him to prove his worth to the side at senior level after dominating at youth level for the U18s and U20s, and he will be competing for the attacking midfield role alongside Austin Odhiambo.
20:45 - 28.10.2025
Aldrine Kibet has earned his first Harambee Stars call-up after getting selected for Kenya’s friendlies against Madagascar and Comoros with two more players making a return.
Baron Ochieng
Another member of the team who participated at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations representing Rising Stars, Ochieng has earned a call up to the set up after joining Egyptian giants Zamalek.
Ochieng has yet to get minutes for his new club in the league, but there is a sense that following a period of adaptation, it will only be a matter of time. Meanwhile, McCarthy has chosen to put his faith in him in order to see what difference he will offer compared to other right backs he has tested before both internationally and locally.
Jonah Ayunga
Jonah Ayunga has made a return to the squad for the first time since March, and will be competing for the number nine position alongside Michael Olunga, Ryan Ogam and Lawrence Okoth.
Okoth is another member of the squad with a chance to show what he can do, but Ayunga still has yet to prove he is capable of leading the line for Kenya. He has scored once for the side against Zimbabwe a year ago, and will get the chance to prove he can add to Benni McCarthy’s headache as he continues building a squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Brian Opondo
Brian Opondo is back in the senior set up for the first time since July, when he was one of the five victims initially called up to the CHAN 2024 squad before Benni McCarthy opted to make some changes.
Opondo has been part of a shaky defence as Tusker have struggled early on in the season, but a clean sheet during their win against Murang’a Seal last Sunday will do his confidence a world of good, and he will be hoping to maintain that momentum in time for the international break in November.
McCarthy’s latest squad sends a clear message — no position is safe, and performance at club level counts more than reputation. The blend of youth and experience highlights his long-term vision: to create a versatile, competitive side capable of dominating in Africa and qualifying for major tournaments.
