NSL: Shabana and Gusii share spoils in goalless draw

Festus Chuma 17:40 - 11.06.2023

The Glamour Boys missed a penalty in the first half as they had to make do with a share of the spoils against rivals Gusii FC.

Shabana were held to goalless draw by Gusii FC in a National Super League match  played on Sunday afternoon at the Simeon Nyachae Stadium in Kisii.

The Glamour Boys started the match brightly with Kevin Okinda delivering a great cross for Colonelius Juma, whose header was saved by goalkeeper Ben Onunga just nine minutes into the encounter.

The visitors continued to control the match with Vincent Nyabuto seeing a lot of the ball in the hosts  half and he was afforded time, and space on the edge of the visitors' box.

The former APS Bomet striker pulled the trigger with his weaker right foot and his thunderous deflected shot  went over the crossbar.

Shabana was again presented with a gilt-edged opportunity to take the lead in the 25th minute after being awarded a penalty after Isaac Otile was brought down inside the area, but he failed to hold his nerve as his spot-kick cleared the bar.

Isaac Otieno then delivered a well-taken corner-kick which found Wycliff Mutua, whose goal-bound header was cleared away by Cyrus Mutie just before half-time; and the score was 0-0 at the interval in Kisii.

Shabana started the second half much as they did the first, and in the 50th minute Samuel Atuti provided a great cross from the left to pick out Vincent Naybuto’s late run into the penalty area, but the young forward steered his shot wide of the target.

On 74 minutes Gusii fullback Abednego Nyakundi  found himself in a good position on the right of the penalty area, but he rushed his shot and saw the ball pushed away to safety by Shabana custodian.

In the 80th minute another great chance was spurned by Gusii as Edwin Ouko’s pull-back from the right byline was missed by Kevin Elegwa  but arrived at the feet of substitute Cyrus Oucho, who lacked the composure needed to hit the target.

Gusii killed off Shabana’s hopes by denying them a goal in the final minute of regulation: a counter attack ended with Isaac Otieno stepping over a low cross to free up Juma, who fired straight to goalkeeper hands.
