While rumours of a dramatic return to Mamelodi Sundowns have gained momentum, sources close to the club suggest the primary obstacle is not financial but rather a question of operational control.

Reports indicate that discussions have stalled over how Pitso Mosimane would fit into the club's current technical structure.

Pitso Mosimane’s Mamelodi Sundowns Return

Mamelodi Sundowns operates under a sporting director model, currently led by Flemming Berg, which emphasises long-term stability and system continuity over the influence of a single manager.

This contrasts with Pitso Mosimane's historically hands-on approach to player recruitment and squad management, a method that brought him unparalleled success across Africa.

Speaking on the Betway Beat podcast, analyst Peter du Toit highlighted this potential clash of philosophies. "The key question is whether those two approaches can coexist," he noted, suggesting that the balance of power, rather than salary negotiations, is the true sticking point.

The club's supporters are divided. Many feel Mosimane's track record justifies giving him significant authority, while others argue that altering a successful system that has delivered consistent trophies would be a major risk.

Bafana Bafana Job an Open Possibility

As the Mamelodi Sundowns situation unfolds, Mosimane has publicly declared his availability for the Bafana Bafana head coach position.

The role is expected to become vacant after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with current coach Hugo Broos likely to depart.

In a December 2025 interview on Marawa Sports Worldwide, Mosimane expressed that the timing was right, citing the strength of emerging young players and a renewed sense of optimism in South African football.

He was clear, however, that any potential appointment must be part of a well-structured, long-term vision, not a quick fix for poor results.

Several other candidates are also being considered for the national team job. Benni McCarthy, who has international coaching experience, and current DR Congo coach Sébastien Desabre are among the names mentioned. Broos has also suggested his assistant, Helman Mkhalele, as a possible successor.
