Morocco coach has backed Salim Babu' Rising Stars to do well against Tunisia and Nigeria to advance from group B of the ongoing U20 AFCON in Egypt.

Kenya’s U20 national team may have fallen short in their opening Group B clash at the TotalEnergies CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations, but their spirited display earned them glowing praise from Morocco head coach Mohammed Ouahbi.

In a thrilling encounter at Cairo’s 30 June Stadium on Thursday, the North Africans were pushed to the limit by a determined Kenyan side before eventually emerging 3-2 winners.

The match was a rollercoaster, with Morocco twice forced to claw their way back before sealing the win late in the second half.

Kenya drew first blood in the 16th minute, when Lawrence Ouma powered in a towering header from a precise Kevin Injehu free-kick.

Morocco responded just before halftime as Yassir Zabiri capitalized on a goalmouth scramble to level the score at 1-1.

Zabiri struck again after the break, this time with a close-range header to put Morocco ahead. But the Rising Stars refused to back down — Hassan Beja fired home a stunning equalizer following a slick combination with Aldrine Kibet, making it 2-2.

The decisive moment came in the 78th minute when Reda Laalaoui showed composure to slot past the Kenyan keeper after being set up by a clever Saad El Haddad pass.

Morocco had a chance to stretch their lead from the penalty spot in the dying minutes, but Bernard Jairo kept Kenya in the game with a superb save to deny Othmane Maamma.

Speaking after the match, Ouahbi was full of admiration for Kenya’s performance.

“I said it yesterday — Kenya are a very good team,” the Moroccan coach told Pan-Africa Football. “They have quality players, they play with personality, they look for spaces in midfield and create chances. That’s exactly what they showed against us.”

Ouahbi acknowledged that Morocco created more opportunities and deserved the win, but he remains convinced that Kenya can make a strong impact in the tournament.

“I hope they win their next match. They were impressive and can be a serious challenge for any opponent,” he added.

Kenya will now shift their focus to a crucial clash against Tunisia, who were edged 1-0 by Nigeria in their opener.

The Rising Stars will look to bounce back and keep their knockout hopes alive when they meet at the same venue on Sunday.
