Kenyan Stars Abroad: Marcelo Sees Red, Michael Olunga on Target, Zak Vyner Edges Closer to Premier League Dream
It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Kenyan footballers playing abroad.
While Erick Ouma endured a night to forget in Poland, Michael Olunga returned to scoring form in Qatar, and Zak Vyner continued his impressive performance in Englandâs Championship as Bristol City moved closer to a coveted Premier League playoff spot.
Here is a recap of the weekend action featuring various Kenyan players abroad.
Marcelo sent off
In Poland, former Gor Mahia defender Erick ‘Marcelo’ Ouma was sent off as Rakow CzÄstochowa lost 1-0 to PogoĆ Szczecin in a Polish top-flight clash on Saturday.
RakĂłw struggled to find their rhythm, especially after Erick Ouma, playing as a right wing-back, received a red card early in the match, leaving them at a disadvantage.
PogoĆ Szczecin dominated possession, controlling 69% of the ball and creating numerous chances, with 15 total shots and 8 on target.
RakĂłw, on the other hand, managed only 5 shots, none of which were on target, highlighting their offensive struggles.
Despite their defensive efforts, RakĂłw couldn't break through PogoĆ's solid backline, which remained resolute throughout the match.
Michael Olunga returns to scoring form for Al Duhail
Kenya international Michael Olunga scored the decisive goal as Al Duhail SC defeated Al Khor 1-0 in a Qatar Stars League fixture at Al-Khwar Stadium on Friday.
The towering Harambee Stars captain scored in the second half, tapping home a cross from Homam Ahmed in the 68th minute after goalkeeper Ali Nader Mahmoud Karim had left his line.
In a surprise move by coach Christophe Galtier, Olunga started from the bench with Ismail Mohamad leading the attack and former Chelsea player Hakim Ziyech playing behind him.
The former Gor Mahia striker was introduced at the start of the second half for Mohamad and scored the only goal of the game. Ziyech was also substituted in the 70th minute for Edmilson Junior.
Olunga's goal ended a run of three games without scoring. He concluded the season with 12 goals from 19 matches and two assists.
Duhail finished the season second with 50 points from 22 matches, while Al-Sadd topped the league with 52 points.
Zak Vynerâs defensive heroics help Bristol push for playoff place
Zak Vynerâs defensive performance helped Bristol City secure a 2-1 win over Sunderland, moving them closer to a promotion playoff place in a Championship clash at Ashton Gate last Friday.
Vyner won three of his four attempted aerial duels and completed 81 out of 88 passes, demonstrating his accuracy on the ball.
Rob Dickie and Ross McCrorie turned the game around after Eliezer Mayenda put the Black Cats in front.
Trai Hume was sent off after seven minutes, giving his side a difficult challenge.
City remain fifth in the Championship table, four points clear of Middlesbrough in seventh. Sunderland sit fourth, having already secured their spot in the playoffs.
