In a tightly contested Championship match the Kenyan defender stood out contributing to his team's solid defense in a dramatic draw.

Harambee Stars defensive prospect Zak Vyner Onyego was a pillar of strength for Bristol City as they battled to a goalless draw against Sunderland in a gripping English Championship encounter on Saturday night.

The match, which saw both teams delivering intense performances, highlighted Onyego's growing reputation as a stalwart in the Robins' defensive lineup.

Bristol City goalkeeper Max O'Leary emerged as a hero pulling off a series of spectacular saves to keep the scoreline even.

The game at the Stadium of Light was a tense affair with Sunderland creating several chances to break the deadlock.

Adil Aouchiche and Bradley Dack both hit the bar in moments that could have tilted the match in Sunderland's favor. However, Bristol City, buoyed by Onyego's defensive prowess and O'Leary's goalkeeping heroics, managed to weather the storm.

Reflecting on the match, Bristol City head coach Liam Manning expressed a mix of relief and satisfaction.

"I'm probably more pleased with the outcome than the performance," Manning told BBC Radio Bristol.

"We showed a different side to us today. It wasn't free-flowing, and we had to exhibit a level of resilience, grit, and fight. The conditions made the game extremely difficult," he added.

The draw follows a tough period for Sunderland, who were reeling from a 5-1 defeat at home to Blackburn earlier in the week.

Interim boss Mike Dodds made three changes to his lineup, seeking a response from his team. The Black Cats started the match with intensity, testing the Robins' defense and O'Leary's resolve from the onset.

Bristol City's defensive unit, with Onyego at its core, was kept busy throughout the match.

Sunderland's early pressure, marked by a significant save from O'Leary off a Dan Ballard header, showcased the home team's intent.

Despite the pressure, Bristol City managed to create chances of their own, with Luke O'Nien making a crucial clearance off the line to deny Scott Twine and maintain the stalemate.

As the match progressed, it became a battle of attrition, with both sides unable to find the decisive breakthrough. O'Leary's late save from Jobe Bellingham further underscored the goalkeeper's pivotal role in securing the draw for the Robins.

The result leaves both teams unchanged in the Championship table, with Bristol City in 12th place and Sunderland two points behind in 13th.
