Romelu Lukaku has revealed he did not want to leave Chelsea in 2023 but was denied a chance with the first team and sent to train with the reserves instead.

Romelu Lukaku has stated that he did not want to depart Chelsea in 2023, after reuniting with the club on August 12, 2021, on a five-year deal.

The Napoli striker rejoined Chelsea from Inter Milan in 2021 for a club-record £97.5m, but his return to Stamford Bridge proved underwhelming.

During his time at Chelsea, Romelu Lukaku managed just eight Premier League goals in his first season back and sparked controversy with an interview given to Sky Italia.

However, Romelu Lukaku has now revealed that he hoped for another chance at Chelsea after his loan spell concluded, only to be informed he was not part of the club's plans.

Romelu Lukaku had initially played for Chelsea in 2011 after signing in August. He signed a five-year contract for a reported fee of around £10 million, rising to £17 million in add-ons.

The following year, 2012, there was speculation that linked Romelu Lukaku with a loan move to Fulham, but he would later join West Bromwich Albion on a season-long loan deal.

Romelu Lukaku would later join Everton on loan in 2013 before signing a five-year contract with the club in 2014.

He had a great time at Everton, enjoying moments of individual brilliance before later joining Manchester United in 2017, signing a five-year contract. Lukaku joined Inter Milan in 2019 before his return to Chelsea.

Speaking to Koolcast Sport, he said: “After the Champions League final, I went back to Chelsea and told them I wanted an opportunity with the first team. They sent me to train with the reserves. What did the media report? That I wanted to leave! No, I didn't want to leave.”

Romelu Lukaku’s latest revelation sheds light on a turbulent chapter in his career, as he opens up about feeling sidelined and misunderstood during his second stint at Chelsea, despite his desire to fight for a place in the squad.
