Former champion has hailed Evra ahead of his MMA debut

Former Manchester United star Patrice Evra is a "proper athlete" whose age will be a minor factor when he makes his highly anticipated MMA debut, according to former PFL featherweight champion Brendan Loughnane.

The co-host of talkSPORT MMA's Uncage show believes the legendary left-back is approaching his new sporting venture with utmost seriousness.

The Professional Fighters League (PFL) recently announced that Evra, who amassed 273 appearances during his illustrious eight-year tenure at Old Trafford, will realise his fighting ambition at PFL Europe Paris on May 23rd.

The 43-year-old began his combat sports journey in 2016, honing his skills alongside PFL standout Cedric Doumbe.

He has recently trained with Briton Loughnane, who joined talkSPORT's Paul Hawksbee and Andy Jacobs to share his impressions of the former footballer's abilities.

"I was incredibly impressed," Loughnane stated.

He continued, "He's actually got a bit of a martial arts background. He's done a bit before and you can actually tell by his stance and the way he positions himself, and of course that left leg that he is famous for. When he was letting them kicks off, you could definitely tell there's some juice behind them and I'm actually excited for his debut."

While Evra's opponent for his Paris debut is yet to be revealed, the Frenchman has jokingly named former Liverpool forward Luis Suarez as an ideal first opponent.

Loughnane, who secured a $1 million prize by winning PFL’s 2022 featherweight tournament, is optimistic about Evra's potential in MMA.

"He really did have everything in place to really have a good go at this MMA thing," Loughnane added.

"And I know he's a little bit older and he's on the other side of 40, but he's kept his body in great nick. He said he didn't even have his first drink until he was 33, he's a proper athlete. He knows what he's doing and I'm really excited for it,” he added.

Loughnane believes Evra's transition is driven by a desire for continued purpose after a decorated football career.

He said, "It is like when you've been at a high level of sports like he asked for so long. It's just something that's gonna give him a bit of purpose. I think that's kicking back in now and with him living such a clean lifestyle and having such an amazing career."

Evra enjoyed a trophy-laden career, winning the Premier League five times with Manchester United, as well as the Champions League and Club World Cup, amongst 14 titles at Old Trafford.

He also had spells with Monaco, Marseille, and Juventus, and earned 81 caps for France.

PFL Europe in Paris will showcase top French MMA talent, including a lightweight clash between Mansour Barnaoui and the undefeated Archie Colgan.

The event will also feature PFL debutant Taylor Lapilus and Belgian prospect Patrick Habirora.
