Renard confirmed the reports that Ivory Coast had bid to loan the two-time AFCON-winning coach from the French Women’s team ahead of their Round of 16 clash against Senegal.

Former Ivory Coast coach Herve Renard has explained why his proposed “loan” move back to the side ahead of their AFCON Round of 16 clash against Senegal on Monday failed to materialise.

The country’s FA had approached their French counterparts to have Renard take over the Elephants until the end of the competition.

Ivory Coast, who failed to get an automatic qualification to the Round of 16, sacked their head coach Jean-Louis Gasset following a 4-0 loss at the hands of Equatorial Guinea.

After securing the knockout stage berth as one of the the best placed second runners, the hosts are hoping to start afresh under a new technical management.

Now, Renard himself has indeed confirmed that Ivory Coast had indeed approached the French Football Federation to take him on loan from his current role as the French National Womens team coach until the end of the competition

“The negotiations did not finish favorably, it’s because it shouldn’t have been,” the 55-year-old revealed on Canal Plus.

Renard has also revealed that he would have “loved” the idea of returning as head coach, considering he actually guided the Elephants to win the tournament back in 2015.

“I’d have loved it but fate chose otherwise,” Renard, who also won the competition with Zambia in 2012, said.

Interim coach Emerse Faé will likely stay in charge for the game against defending champion Senegal in Yamoussoukro on Monday.
