The lifting of FIFA restrictions has opened the door for FKF to regain access to millions in development funding, marking a major boost for Kenyan football’s future.
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has received a significant financial boost after FIFA, the global football governing body, lifted restrictions on its development funding.
The decision allows the immediate resumption of financial support through the FIFA Forward Programme. In a letter dated December 15, FIFA's Governance Audit and Compliance Committee (GACC) confirmed the end of a period of stringent financial oversight.
This scrutiny began after a central audit review in 2024 yielded unfavourable results, compounding issues from a 2022 FIFA ban imposed on Kenya due to government interference.

Jonah Ayunga: St Mirren Boss Tells Benni McCarthy What Makes Harambee Stars Striker Tick
St Mirren coach has opened up about qualities that make Jonah Ayunga a special player after he terrorised Scottish giants Celtic to end the club’s 12-year wait for a trophy.
"The Governance Audit and Compliance Committee has decided that the standard release of development funding under the Forward Programme is to be resumed with immediate effect."
With this decision, FKF can now access its full allocation for the 2023-2026 FIFA Forward 3.0 cycle, which totals approximately KSh 1 billion (USD $8 million).
These funds are vital for key infrastructure projects, such as the construction of a new Technical Centre in Machakos. However, FIFA has stipulated that the federation, led by President Hussein Mohammed, will remain under observation.

Kenyan striker Jonah Ayunga has termed his Scottish League cup win as the best moment of his 12-year career after his two goals guided St Mirren to victory over giants Celtic.
The GACC has mandated a monthly reporting mechanism on the use of FIFA Forward funds, which will continue at least until its next meeting in March 2026.
"The GACC strongly encourages the FKF to continue with the implementation of the required actions to further improve its financial management, including the proper use of the funds," FIFA's letter advised.
FKF President Hussein Mohammed has consistently emphasised the federation's commitment to enhancing financial controls to restore transparency and build credibility with both local and international partners.
The unfreezing of these funds will enable the FKF to advance its core mission of developing football nationwide, focusing on youth programs and capacity building ahead of a busy 2024 calendar that includes the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
