David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng’ has stressed on the importance of “hyping up the game” in order to attract local fans to come and help grow Kenyan football.

Harambee Stars and Kenya Police defender David “Cheche” Ochieng’ has revealed what Kenyan football must borrow from rugby and Tanzanian football in order to attract more match-going fans to local league games.

Ochieng, who also played for Tusker, AFC Leopards and Mathare United, has stressed on the importance of “hyping up the game” in order to attract local fans to come and help grow Kenyan football.

“Our league can attract a lot of fans if we can hype up the game,” Ochieng’ told Sports Eye Sports.

“If our game is hyped the way rugby (Kenya Rugby Union) advertises tournaments and the way Tanzanians hype their league positively through social media, fans come.”

Ochieng believes it is as simple as hyping up big games by creating awareness that will enable local league football to keep growing.

He has also stressed on the importance of guaranteeing them security in order to retain them in the stadia.

“The more you show people that there are crunch games every weekend, people will come, but if people do not know, they will not come.

“Each and every Kenyan fan should know when and where the matches are taking place, guarantee them security and people will come to the matches!”

Ochieng’  also stressed on the importance of bringing tournaments to Kenya in order to bring fans to the stadia, pinpointing the CECAFA u18 tournament that took place in Kakamega and Kisumu.

“The finals were amazing and overall, I believe that the setup and everything, including the security, was good and the fans also turned up because once you bring such tournaments to Kenya, the fans help rally behind the teams.”

Cheche has been capped 37 times by Kenya, scoring two goals. He began his career at Nairobi Stima from where he was signed by Tusker in his Premier League debut.

From Tusker, “Cheche” turned professional playing for Saudi Arabia sides Al-Tawoon and Al Arabia.

He then left to play for New York Cosmos in the US and Swedish side Brommapojkarna. When he returned home, he rejoined Mathare United but left after one season to play for Posta Rangers. He also featured for Leopards and returned to Mathare briefly before joining Police.
