The Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya has scored big following the arrest of an Indian national who was in possession of performance-enhancing drugs in Iten.

Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) has scored big once again in their fight against doping in the country after an Indian national was arrested with a consignment that contained performance-enhancing substances.

The individual was arrested with the drugs in the athletics- rich town of Iten in Elgeyo Marakwet County following a raid by ADAK and officials from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday.

“The raid was conducted following actionable intelligence indicating possible involvement in activities related to the distribution and use of the prohibited performance-enhancing substances,” ADAK said through a statement.

“The report was booked at Iten Police Station. Investigations are ongoing to establish the full scope of the activities, including potential networks, clients, and any violations of Kenya Anti-Doping Law and International Anti-Doping policies, rules and regulations.”

The raid had been carried out at the suspect’s premises with an illegal consignment containing human growth hormone (HGH), meldonium and mannitol, common among doping athletes, discovered.

“The presence of intravenous (IV) paraphernalia, including IV bags, syringes, and needles — both used and unused — further pointed to possible doping practices,” ADAK further said.

“Iten town is recognized by athletes worldwide as a training hub for elite long-distance runners. The town hosts athletes from various countries. ADAK therefore is greatly concerned with the presence and circulation of prohibited substances within the town. Prohibited substances are not only illegal in sports but also a danger to athletes’ health.”

The arrest shows how ADAK is tightening the noose not just on drug cheats but those supplying them with the harmful substances that have left Kenya in the list of shame with the country listed among ‘Category A’, meaning nations with the highest prevalence of doping cases.

Kenya has had hundreds of athletes banned over various doping cases in recent years but the vice is still far from over despite the heavy sanctions.
