Hellen Obiri was in a class of her own as she obliterated a strong field to reclaim her New York City Marathon title.

Two-time Boston Marathon champion Hellen Obiri reigned supreme in the women's race of the 54th edition of the New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 2.

The race drew thousands of athletes to the challenging course with elite stars such as Eliud Kipchoge, Sifan Hassan, Hellen Obiri, and Sharon Lokedi headlining the professional men's and women's events.

Eliud Kipchoge went into the event with the main focus on competing in the only World Marathon Major he had yet to line up for, a move that he believes will make him a true marathoner.

On her part, Sifan Hassan was making her debut in the streets of New York City after finishing third in London and winning the Sydney Marathon.

She was lining up against defending champion Sheila Chepkirui, former champion Hellen Obiri and Boston Marathon champion Sharon Lokedi among other stars.

The women's race started at 4:35 pm East African Time, and passing the 5km mark, Hellen Obiri was in the lead with American Fiona O'Keeffe running in second.

Defending champion Sheila Chepkirui passed the mark in third with Sharon Lokedi running closely behind her. Sifan Hassan, competing on the hilly course for the first time, was running in 13th place.

Passing the 10km mark, Sheila Chepkirui was in the lead, running alongside Hellen Obiri and Fiona O'Keeffe. Sharon Lokedi and Sarah Vaughn were running closely behind them. Sifan Hassan had climbed to sixth-place.

Sheila Chepkirui was still in the lead after the 15km mark, running with Hellen Obiri, who was now in third, looking very poised to reclaim her title. Sharon Lokedi had now climbed to second with Fiona O'Keeffe and Vivian Cheruiyot also in the lead.

Hellen Obiri took charge briefly past the 20km mark, but Sheila Chepkirui dethroned her past the 21km mark. Sharon Lokedi was running in second. Passing the 21km mark, Sifan Hassan climbed to fifth place.

Two-time Boston Marathon champion Hellen Obiri then took the lead, passing the 25km mark, with reigning Nagoya Marathon champion Sheila Chepkirui running in second. Sharon Lokedi was running in third.

At the 30km mark, Sheila Chepkirui was in the lead, with Hellen Obiri, Sharon Lokedi, Fiona O'Keeffe and Sifan Hassan running slightly behind her.

Heading into the 35km mark, the battle was now between the Kenyan trio of Sharon Lokedi, Hellen Obiri and Sheila Chepkirui.

Sheila Chepkirui was then dropped at about the 37km mark, leaving the battle between Sharon Lokedi and Hellen Obiri just like the Boston Marathon earlier this year, where the former took the victory.

Hellen Obiri then unleashed a finishing kick, outpacing Sharon Lokedi to cross the finish line first in 2:19:51, ahead of Sharon Lokedi who came in second in a time of 2:20:07. Sheila Chepkirui rounded up the podium in 2:20:24.
