Wanyonyi's Diamond League season began with a third-place finish in Rabat on May 25 as he trailed Botswana's Tshepiso Masalela and Britain's Max Burgin in first and second respectively.

However, he rebounded with a victory in Oslo on June 12, followed by wins in Stockholm on June 15 and Monaco last Friday, running a world-leading time of 1:41.44.

Remarkably, Wanyonyi is the only athlete to break the 1:42 barrier in the 800m this year.

After his Monaco win, he stated, "I came here prepared for this race. I am thankful I was able to run a season best, world lead and meeting record. I gave my best today, so I am happy with the result."

These races are part of his preparations for the World Championships in September.

"The focus now is on the preparations for the next races before the World Championships," he added.

Battle With Arop as Rudisha's Record Still Linger

In London, Wanyonyi will face a challenging field including Arop, American Bryce Hoppel, France's Gabriel Tual, and Mohamed Attaoui.

Wanyonyi and Arop have both previously expressed a desire to break David Rudisha's 800m record of f 1:40.91, set at the 2012 London Olympics.

The London showdown presents an opportunity for both athletes, especially Wanyonyi who has come close but fell short in a couple of occassions.

As they lineup on Saturday eyes will be on the two rivals to see whether neither of them can fulfil their expressed ambitions.
