However, it was Dobson – running out of lane 7 – who powered down the home straight with unmatched determination to take first place, marking a major breakthrough in his career.
Hudson-Smith had to settle for second in 44.27, still a strong performance but not enough to contain the surging Dobson, who rose five places in the rankings with his winning run.
The 24-year-old Dobson now holds a season’s best and personal best, and has firmly placed himself among the world’s elite heading into the final phase of the athletics calendar.
South Africa’s Zakithi Nene also impressed, finishing third in 44.29 – just two hundredths behind Hudson-Smith – to claim the final podium spot. Nene’s consistency on the circuit this year was once again evident as he battled stride-for-stride with the British pair.
American Vernon Norwood, who had been among the early leaders, finished fourth in 44.34 – his season’s best – but just missed out on a top-three spot in a remarkably tight race.
Botswana’s Busang Collen Kebinatshipi equalled his season’s best with 44.51 to come home fifth, showing promise as the young talent continues to develop on the international stage.
His compatriot Bayapo Ndori, however, could not find his usual rhythm and finished seventh in 45.30.
Australia’s Reece Holder, who had a strong start to the race in lane 2, faded slightly over the final 100 metres and crossed the line in sixth with 44.76. Rounding out the field was another Brit, Toby Harries, who finished eighth in 45.41.
